Vertical garden: smart, beautiful space-saving

If you’ve ever thought, “I don’t have space to grow a garden,” this is your sign to rethink that. The solution for small balcony is to grow a vertical garden.

What is a vertical garden?

A vertical garden is exactly what it sounds like: growing plants upwards instead of outwards. Rather then using floor space, you use: walls, shelves, hanging systems, stackable planters, etc.

Why beginners love it:

  • Takes up very little space
  • Keeps plants organized and accessible
  • Easier to maintain (less bending, less mess)
  • Adds a calming, aesthetic vibe to your home.

Yes, you can even grow vegetables

A vertical vegetable garden focuses specifically on growing edible plants like: herbs (basil, mint, parsley), leafy greens (lettuce, spinach), and small vegetables (cherry tomatoes, peppers).

More than just green

Vertical gardens are a practical solution for restoring greenery in urban areas. Numerous studies have explored this topic on a larger scale, addressing issues such as food scarcity and the lack of arable land in relation to population growth, as well as their role in architecture for introducing greenery into dense urban spaces.

But, which are the immediate benefits?

🧠❤️Psychological and healthy effects. A study conducted by Lotfi et al. (2020) shows that, after being eyposed to vertical gardens in a virtual environment, positive effects on blod preassure and heart rate can already be observed (p.843-844). The results of the research indicate that “nature can positively contribute to the general health and emotional state […]“. Vertical gardens improve the “urban quality of life” genereting well-being in an individual’s environment (p.846).

🐝🐞Support the urban biodiversity. Vertical gardens, even if small, can support urban biodiversity by creating tiny habitats for insects like bees and butterflies. With a mix of plants, especially flowering ones, they attract different species and bring more life into the city.

These are just some of the benefits of vertical gardens on a small scale. Overall, vertical gardens are a sustainable way to bring more greenery into your space and grow your own food at home. They help create a calm, natural environment while promoting health and a sense of self-sufficiency.

A step-by-step guide to start your vertical garden

1. Pick your space
Look for: a sunny wall or balcony (at least 4-6 hours of light daily). If you don’t have direct sunlight, you can start with herbs like mint.
2. Choose a simple system
Beginner-friendly options:
– Hanging pots
– Wall-mounted planters
– Stackable vertical planters
3. Use the right soil
Use light, well-draining potting mix (not garden soil). This helps prevent overwatering, one of the most common beginner mistakes.
4. Choose the plants
Start small. These plants are forgiving and grow well vertically:
Easy starters: basil, mint, lettuce, spinach.
Slightly advanced (but still beginner-friendly): cherry tomatoes, peppers, green beans.
Tip: If you’re nervous about “killing plants,” start with herbs. They grow fast and bounce back easily.
5. Water smart, not more
Vertical gardens dry out faster. Simple rule: check soil with your finger:
If dry → water
If moist → wait
