According to the American Orchid Society (a, n.d.), there are no known poisonous orchid species, and many orchids are technically edible to some degree, although it’s better not to eat them. Orchids are also considered hypoallergenic because their pollen is contained in sticky sacs called pollinia rather than being released into the air like the dust-like pollen of many other plants.
Orchids care made simple
Many people believe orchids are difficult to care for, but once you understand the basics, maintaining them becomes much easier than it seems. According to the McHatton (2014), successful orchid care starts with identifying the type of orchid you are growing, since each variety has its own specific needs. However, like all plants, orchids generally thrive when they receive the right balance of light, airflow, water, and nutrients, allowing them to grow healthy and produce beautiful blooms.

Instead of following a strict schedule, orchids should be watered only when the potting mix is almost dry, although they should still receive a thorough watering at least once a month.
There are several simple ways to check moisture levels (McHatton, 2014):
- A dry potting mix will appear lighter in color and dry to the touch, the pot will feel lighter in weight.
- You can also insert a wooden skewer into the mix; if it comes out nearly dry, it is usually time to water.
- When in doubt, gently placing a finger into the potting mix is one of the easiest and safest ways to check for remaining moisture.
When watering, soak the orchid thoroughly until water flows freely from the drainage holes. This not only hydrates the roots properly but also helps flush away accumulated salts. Good drainage is essential because orchid roots need both moisture and airflow to remain healthy (McHatton, 2014).
✨Fertilizer
Orchids benefit from regular but moderate feeding, especially during the growing season, when nutrients can support healthier growth and encourage more abundant blooms. Using a diluted fertilizer specifically formulated for orchids is often the best option for beginners. To protect the roots from stress or damage, it is also recommended to water the plant before applying fertilizer (McHatton, 2014).

Repotting is an important part of orchid care because it helps maintain healthy roots, proper drainage, and fresh growing conditions. According to the American Orchid Society (b, n.d.), orchids should generally be repotted every 1-2 years. Newly purchased orchids should also be repotted within the first two weeks after being brought home, allowing the plant to better adapt to its new environment.

- Roots growing outside the pot
- A soggy or compact potting mix
- Yellowing leaves
- Mushy, damaged, or overcrowded roots
- Poor water drainage from the pot
The best time to repot orchids is usually after the blooming season, when the plant can focus its energy on developing new roots and healthy growth (American Orchid Society (b), n.d.).
How to repot an orchid: step-by-step
Now that you know when and why repotting is important, let’s look at the process step-by-step.
- Carefully remove the orchid from its current pot.
- Gently clean the roots and remove any old bark or moss. If the roots are sticking to the pot, soaking them in water for a few minutes can make the process much easier.
- Using sterilized scissors, trim away any dry, mushy, or damaged roots.
- Choose a pot with good drainage that is only slightly larger than the previous one.
- Add fresh orchid bark or a high-quality orchid potting mix.
- Place the orchid in the center of the pot and spread the roots naturally without forcing them.
- Fill the pot lightly with the growing mix, leaving enough airflow around the roots and avoiding excessive pressure.
- Wait a few days before watering so the roots have time to adjust and recover from repotting.
